The National Family Partnership organized the first Nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign in 1988. Since that time, the campaign has reached millions of U.S. children.

In 1997, the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse began committing resources to ensure the continuation of the Red Ribbon Campaign in Texas, as well as the hopes and beliefs behind this grassroots effort to protect children from the dangers of alcohol and other drugs.

Great American Smokeout

The American Cancer Society (ACS) holds the Great American Smokeout® each November to help smokers quit cigarettes for at least one day, in hopes they will quit forever.

In 2002, a total of 45.8 million U.S. adults (22.10%) were current smokers, a decrease from 24.1% in 1998, and an estimated 46 million adults were former smokers (1). For the first time, more adults had quit smoking than were still smoking.

Cigarette smokers are encouraged to quit smoking for at least 24 hours in the hope they might stop smoking.

The likelihood of permanently quitting smoking is increased when effective therapies are used, such as physician assistance, pharmacologic treatment, and behavioral counseling. In addition to individual methods, an environmental approach to reducing tobacco use involves increasing the excise tax for tobacco products, developing multicomponent mass media campaigns, fostering provider reminder systems, using telephone quitlines, reducing patient out-of-pocket costs for effective cessation therapies, and reducing exposure to secondhand smoke through smoking bans and restrictions.

Additional information about the Great American Smokeout is available at http://www.cancer.org/ or by telephone, 800-227-2345.

2011 Texas Teen Tobacco Summit & Comprehensive Tobacco Prevention Conference

The 2011 Texas Teen Tobacco Summit and Comprehensive Tobacco Prevention Conference has been scheduled for July 2011.

This conference is an assembly of tobacco-control professionals, researchers, healthcare providers, community outreach specialists, law enforcement officers, counselors, teachers and youth dedicated to protecting Texas youth from the dangers of tobacco.

The Comptroller's Office & Texas STEP, as major conference supporters, and providers of the Law Enforcement training track, encourage all Local Law Enforcement Agencies & School Based Police Agencies participating in the Comptroller Tobacco Compliance Enforcement Grant program to attend this year's conference if you have unexpended funds.

This conference is considered an allowable & valid expense for Comptroller' grantees in the "compliance education" budget category.  You are invited to send up to two adult individuals to the conference using your available grant funds.

If you wish to send additional personnel, or sponsor children to attend this conference, you must contact the Tobacco Grant Manager, at the Comptroller's Office, 800-531-5441, to make prior arrangements for that variation, before registering for the conference.

Please note that first-time CPA grant attendees should attend the Enforcement sessions since your CPA grant funds are for enforcement activities.

Be sure to get your registration forms in early.
